Most of the real money being made online or by moms working at home, is done by getting started in a home based business. And before the thought of owning your own business scares you away, let me explain how this all works…

First of all – there is almost every kind of product or service being marketed by stay at home mothers. Many companies are basically turning their marketing over to network marketing, which is simply people networking with each other around the world, passing the word along about a particular company, product or service…Because of the internet, the world is our marketplace, and therefore, regardless what it is…there is a market out there for it!

And… who is better at networking with others than stay at home moms! If they find an exceptional product, soon their whole circle knows about it… and before they know it they are marketing a product or service for the company…so why not get paid to do it?!

In most cases the company will provide you with websites to work with, training and support on how to market outside your circle of influence, and a compensation or pay plan in place, so that you know how much you will get paid and when…

Because it is a business opportunity, you will need to start adapting to a ‘business mindset’ instead of a ‘job mentality’… in a job, you only get paid on a percentage of your labor – your boss benefits the most from your efforts. For every dollar you make for yourself, you are very likely making THEM ten dollars… That is just how a job works…Your boss is the one that makes the investment into his business, and therefore he reaps the benefits.

If you have your OWN business, you can set your own goals and work as hard or as little as you want – and make money accordingly. There are always some business expenses and overhead, in ANY business – and a home based business is no different….except that the investment and overhead is much less.

So when you are researching on how to start a home based business, especially for stay at home mothers, the best thing is to find a product or service that you like or at least that you feel good about marketing, and then find out what is available as far as training and websites,etc…

More and more companies are doing all their training strictly by conference lines or through the internet for the sakes of moms that want to work at home as many of them can’t go to training seminars on a regular basis…Many moms working at home are working on the internet or returning phone calls a few hours a day, and making more money than most corporate employees.

It’s a win-win situation for both the company AND stay at home mothers…Instead of paying the high cost of marketing, the company is able to pay out huge commissions to home business owners that are network marketing for them…These moms (and dads) are able to be at home with their families, creating a better environment for their kids to grow up in, and making this world a better place – many are just ordinary people making an extra-ordinary income from home, thanks to the opportunity of being able to get started in a home based business.

Did you know that Mother’s Day has a controversial and political meaning, going back to 1872? That is when a woman named Julia Ward Howe wrote the Mother’s Day Proclamation. Howe was opposed to war and tried to get mothers throughout the United States to join together against war anywhere in the world.

Julia Howe had written the words to The Battle Hymn of the Republic earlier, in 1861, after being devastated by the Civil War. She wanted women to unite and help to bring an end to fighting and war of any kind. She believed that if mothers stood up against war then the men in government would listen and wars would become a thing of the past.

But it was not to be. Howe was a vocal abolitionist and had come into disfavor with those who wanted slavery to continue well after the end of the Civil War. These people made it difficult for Howe to get her message out. Her Proclamation became an underground message for women’s rights. Women’s liberation was not a popular movement at this time in our country’s history so Mother’s Day for Peace was celebrated quietly by few women for the next 30 years.

It is interesting that Mother’s Day would have its roots in a peace loving, abolitionist, women’s rights system of beliefs. Howe wanted women to be able to vote, but that desire probably kept the women of her time from having any more rights and privileges than they already enjoyed. If women had been given the vote back in the 1870’s the future of the United States may have gone differently. Instead, women were forced to wait until 1920 to vote.

Susan B. Anthony had cast an illegal vote in the same year,1872, and was fined $100 for doing so. More than likely she cast her vote for Horace Greeley and not for Ulysses S. Grant. Greeley, who died a few weeks after the election, was considered to be the more liberal candidate and also had spoken in favor of women’s rights in general.

So in the same year that Susan B. Anthony was voting illegally and Horace Greeley was running for President as a liberal candidate, Julia Ward Howe wrote her Mother’s Day Proclamation and started Mother’s Day for Peace.

It wasn’t until many years later that Anna Jarvis, the daughter of a woman who helped care for soldiers during the Civil War, was able to start a national day of recognition for all mothers in the United States.

Here we are 135 years later and although women now have the vote and many other privileges once only granted to men, not much has changed on the war front. Happy Mother’s Day to all women readers. Think about what we can all do today that was only allowed to be done by men in the past. Maybe we can change some more things for women of the future.

Or you can create a simple site devoted to selling your one-of-a-kind flower pots. Maybe it is through eBay or maybe not. If you have any technical skills, you can build a website easily enough. And if you don’t have any, there are a number of “website in a box” options from reputable folks that can have you up and running in little time. Just be sure that you have the rights to your site content and products – and that you are not stuck waiting for someone else to update your site for weeks.

Or maybe you just have a lot to say. Blogging could be your best bet. Keep in mind that lots of people have blogs – and the number grows exponentially each year. But if you have a particular niche with a great spin (and your personality can be enough to set you apart from the “corporate” bloggers), it can be a good way to get your online business started. And it can be free.

Getting bigger
No matter how small you start, there will be a time that you need to decide to grow your online business bigger – or not. Add it to the stack of decisions you make each day – no problem!

Maybe your little eBay store is rocking, and you are now selling for other family members or neighbors. For free. Why not consider setting up a business and charging a small fee for each sale? Or maybe you’ve expanded your flower pot line to include other gardening gear and an ebook. And your blog is so popular that you are creating a website based on what your audience really likes.

Whatever your decision, make sure it’s about you – the mom. Remember, this is a gift to yourself so that you can follow your passion (and maybe make some money).
